Katelyn Vala, of Langhorne, was recently awarded the William G. McGowan Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Studies – Psy.D. at Marywood University’s 2023 commencement ceremony.
The McGowan medal was founded in honor of William G. McGowan, a founder of MCI Communications Corp., by the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund. The medal recognizes scholarship, integrity, discipline, creativity and human service.
The daughter of Maria Moco and a graduate of Neshaminy High School, Dr. Vala earned a doctoral degree in clinical psychology (Psy.D.) from Marywood. During her time at Marywood, Dr. Vala was active with the Peers on Wellness (POW) Club, Underrepresented Psychology Student Inclusion, Development, and Empowerment (UPSIDE), and the Psychology Club.
She ran multiple screening days for the community (eating disorders, anxiety, depression, etc.) and was the campus representative for Pennsylvania Psychological Association (PPA). Additionally, Dr. Vala produced multiple articles for the PPA as a part of the Public Education Committee.
In her free time, Dr. Vala enjoys reading, doing anything creative or artistic, and spending time with family, friends, and her significant other.
