It’s time for a home exterior checkup!
As the winter begins to loosen its hold on the area it’s time to take step back and assess the damage that Mother Nature caused to your home. There are some easy ways to determine what needs to be taken care of before winter comes back around.
Take a walk around the interior of your house and look at the ceilings below the roof surface. Are their stains or damage to the drywall?
If the answer is “yes” then look to see if there are missing shingles on the roof. There may also be a flashing issue against a side wall or around a ventilation product like a pipe or fan.
If you have skylights, is there condensation between the glass panes? Are there stains on the drywall that may be the result of a leak in the flashings or the roofing?
Is the wood frame of the skylight warping or showing signs of mold? These could be indicators that your skylight needs to be replaced.
Next, take a walk around the outside of your house and at look the overall condition of your siding and gutters. Are there any missing pieces of siding, any pieces that have come apart, or have fallen out of position and are at risk of being damaged?
Are the gutters connected to the house securely? Are the downspouts connected to the gutter properly? Are there spots on the ground where the landscaping appears to be washed away to indicate water spilling over the gutters?
This could be the result of a blockage in the gutters. Now is the time to evaluate your home’s exterior so that you may avoid possible future issues.
