Discovery Day Care Spotlight:

Giving “Smyles for Myles”

Since 2003, Discovery Day Care of Morrisville has provided a loving, nurturing home away from home to babies and children in our community.

Owners Jacqueline and Dan Decker strive to ensure all children are well prepared academically to enter kindergarten and proceeding through elementary school. However, Discover Day Care is way more than just a place to learn academic skills.

When speaking about Discovery Day Care’s annual Preschool Graduation Project, Jacqueline explains, “We strive to bring out the best in each child, showing them the importance of caring for others. Children are innately kind, and we strive to create opportunities to further develop their empathy and understanding that it is our responsibility to take care of others in needs.”

This lifelong foundation of empathy and philanthropy had been learned in past Preschool Graduation Projects by donating filled backpacks to underprivileged kindergarten classes, partnering with Make-A-Wish® to raise funds for children with life-threatening illnesses, making a “superhero” video for sick and isolated children during the Covid pandemic, just to name a few.

So, this year when this daycare community learned of their three-year-old preschooler Valerie’s brother, Myles, born with a rare genetic disorder called Campomelic Dysplasia (CD) Syndrome, helping Valerie’s family became Discovery Day Care’s Preschool Graduation Project.

“We are asking our daycare families to donate money for food or expenses to help take some of the burdens off of Valerie’s family,” describes Jacqueline. “We encourage our families to include their children in this fundraising effort by asking them to hold lemonade stands to raise money. Since this is a serious topic, we talk with our preschoolers about why we are helping Valerie in a way that they can understand. We substitute words like ‘worry’ with ‘smiles,’ so we say ‘Smyles for Myles’. All of the children at Discover Day Care and Kids Camps learn that if you take action and help others, you can make the world a better place to live.”
