Safety tips for backyard pools

submitted by Anton & Sons Pools, www.antonpools.com

While your family pool provides endless hours of fun, entertainment and relaxation, safety should always remain at the forefront of your mind.

Secure Your Pool When Not in Use – One of the most common mistakes is leaving the pool area unsecured.

We recommend you completely surround your pool with four-sided isolation fencing including a self-closing and self-latching gate out of the reach of children.

According to American Red Cross, a four-sided isolation fence (separating the pool area from the house and yard) reduces a child’s risk of drowning 83% compared to three-sided property-line fencing.

If your pool is aboveground, it’s good practice to secure, lock or remove steps or ladders that can be used to access without adult supervision. For further protection, install door alarms or locks out on windows and doors that lead to the pool area.

A lockable cover or pool alarm system is another option.

Establish Safe Behaviors – Practice safe pool behaviors at all times.

Avoid entering the pool headfirst unless there is a safe diving area with enough depth. Stay clear of drains or other openings with suction.

Always swim with a buddy! Don’t go in alone or without someone watching you. Swim sober, and supervise others without distractions.

Water Safety Steps – Life jackets and float devices are other layers of protection to be used in your pool.

Keep close supervision of children to prevent drowning. Ensure every member of the family learns to swim! You never know when this will come in handy.

In the event of emergency, know what to do. If someone is in trouble, call for emergency help and administer CPR if necessary.

Safe and happy swimming!
