    Spotlight: Friends Village

Empowering older adults through technology and enriching programs at Friends Village

Friends Village is a community for older adults that has been in continuous operation in beautiful Newtown for the last 125 years.

Guided by the science of healthy aging, and Quaker values, its Mission is: “To foster purposeful living and social connectivity through a community of kindness.”

In its third year, the Friends Village Senior Planet initiative has equipped more than 125 participants with vital tech skills, from computer essentials to navigating smartphones and digital culture.

Developed by OATS, a charitable affiliate of AARP, the Senior Planet curriculum is thoughtfully designed for mature learners, promoting not just technical proficiency but also fostering friendships, enhancing health, encouraging advocacy, and bolstering financial literacy in today’s digital landscape.

Friends Village is excited to announce its latest Senior Planet training session:

    • Computer Essentials (commencing July 15th): This five-week course delves into the foundational skills of computing. While some prior experience is beneficial, it’s not a prerequisite. Practice labs will be available for hands-on learning.
    • Smartphone Workshops (August 19th, 21st, 26th, 28th): From mastering the basics to delving into advanced features like Google Photos and photo sharing, these sessions will familiarize you with the potential capability of your smartphone.

But the programs don’t stop there!

This fall, the Friends Village calendar is brimming with events featuring esteemed figures such as historian Charlie Thomforde, author Pat Mervine, and activist George Lakey. Additionally, we’re honored to welcome presentations by the Bucks County League of Women Voters and Beacon Hill Friends.

Stay tuned for comprehensive program details and registration information! As seating is limited and classes tend to fill up quickly, those interested are encouraged to reserve their seats.
