Teens and adults with disabilities filled a large room at the Free Library of Northampton Township in Richboro on Wednesday, July 10 eager to paint during “Art with Anita”, presented by the Autism Cares Foundation (ACF)
They listened intently to teacher Anita Thompson of Artventure Workshops, or as everyone calls her “Miss Anita”, who explained that the evening’s lesson was a mixed media beach scene using water-colored paints on a square paper. They had the option of using a rectangular paper to cut out shells.
Each student sat with a parent or caregiver who also got into the act of making his/her own beach creation.
Miss Anita, who primarily teaches art workshops at libraries, described how self-directed and creative these students are. “I think these workshops are therapeutic for them because it gives them an opportunity to focus and follow directions while playing with colors. By the end of these classes, everyone’s artwork looks different, and that’s what I love about it. I want them to use their imagination so that my sample is just a sample that they can add or detract from and create their own unique masterpiece.”
Miss Anita explained that each class incorporates different themes using multiple art forms and techniques to keep the many repeat participants engaged and interested.
At the end of each class all students stand up as a group to proudly pose with their completed artwork.

Cindy Cook, ACF Operations Administrator, explained how these classes provide a great opportunity for students and their parents to socialize with others. Many of them have made lasting friendships by routinely attending these workshops.
“Art with Anita” takes place monthly on Wednesday evenings.
During the summer, it is held at the Northampton library, and during the school year, it is held at Maureen M. Welch Elementary School in Churchville.
This workshop is just one of the 200 events planned by ACF this year. It is open to anyone 14 and older at any level. A parent or a caregiver is required to attend.
Although attendees are predominantly from Bucks County since these workshops are held in this county, anyone from any area is welcome to join in the fun for just a $3 registration fee. All art supplies are provided.
