    Seniors develop new creative outlet

    by June Portnoy

It’s never too late to learn a new skill!

As a result, many seniors at the Northampton Township James E. Kinney Senior Center in Richboro are taking drawing lessons.

Maureen Lehotsky, a retired artist with a background in graphic design, began teaching drawing classes at this senior center over a year ago. She explained that these students progressed so quickly that the center established a Drawing II class for them so they would feel more challenged. That class now meets Thursdays at 10am.

For beginning students, Maureen began teaching a new Drawing I class in September that meets Wednesdays at 10am. During a recent Drawing I class, Maureen gave a lesson on drawing flowers so her students could learned to draw shapes like the flower’s round center and its oval pedals.

She explained that these students use black pencils to draw because she wants them to learn the basics first. “You need to know how to draw before you can translate it into color and before you can advance to other art forms.”

She added, “Everyone is excited when learn a new technique so the payoff for me is watching their excitement.”

According to Maureen, senior center members enjoy coming to class to learn and to socialize.  “We have fun here.”

Classes are reasonably priced at just $2 for members and only $4 for nonmembers.

If drawing is not for you, this senior center is certain to have an activity you will enjoy. Whether you are interested in exercise, dancing, wellness, or seasonal leagues, this senior center has something that will interest you.

Its mission is to enhance the lives of individuals ages 55 or better by providing engagement in social, physical and educational opportunities, and to have vital involvement in their community.  The center is open to those who live in or outside Northampton Township.
