The Sit and Knit Club at the Huntington Valley Library was established close to 20 years ago. What began as a club to teach children to knit evolved into a teenage knitting club for a short time and then to the adult club that it is today.
Even though this club is currently open to all ages, today its approximately 25 members are between the ages of 60 and 65.
Vijaya Karnik, has been coordinating the Sit & Knit club since 2005.
“What’s nice about this club is that members come and actually talk to each other, as opposed to being on their cell phones or other digital devices,” described Vijaya.
As you observe these members while they knit at the library’s Friends Learning Lab, you can quickly see that this is a great place for them to make new friends and forge new connections. They can have engaging conversations with their fellow clubmates while working on their knitting projects.
Members work on a variety of different knitting projects as they sit around a table. Marcia Gutowicz, a member for five years, enjoys coming to receive her club members’ perspective on her knitting. She also likes sharing ideas with like-minded people.
Kate Roth comes all the way from Philadelphia because she explains that it’s hard to find a knitting club and was thrilled to find this one.
Elizabeth Rufe finds club members helpful when she has a problem with or questions about her knitting.
The Sit and Knit Club meets two Mondays a month. For information on the specific dates that this club will meet in September visit the calendar on the library’s website at hvlibrary.org. Also check out the other programs and events taking place for all age groups. The Huntingdon Valley Library is located at 625 Red Lion Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA.
