Whole house humidifiers cause more trouble than not

Have you ever thought the air in your house seems a little dry? Are you considering the purchase of a whole house humidifier?  Maybe you should reconsider this before spending hard-earned dollars.

Whole house humidifiers add moisture to your heating system so that the dry air is lessened during the winter months. This process is good for breathing air quality. What is not noticed is what happens to the moisture that settles on the woodwork, furnishings or more importantly, your attic. That moist air rises with the warm air and travels into gaps leading into the attic. That moisture attaches to the framing, insulation and boxes. These areas are now susceptible to mold growth, rot or staining.

Excessive condensation will begin to eat away at roof decking, flooring, window frames and even support framing. This can weaken the infrastructure. Mold spores can also attach themselves to moist areas and grow. Some of the signs of mold are white or black spotting and streaking. Also, the woodwork may be moist to the touch. When the temperature drops below freezing there may even be frost on those areas. Once you have mold in your house it can be costly and time consuming to remediate.

Another reason that whole house humidifiers are harmful to your house is that most people overreact to the dry air. Most people will set the moisture level well above standard moisture levels to counteract the dry air they are experiencing. Also, the humidity goes to all rooms in the house regardless of air circulation quality.

The fact is that your home already gets a significant amount of moisture from standard home use such as steam from showers, steam from cooking, etc. These activities alone all help to create a safe level of humidity in the home.
