The importance of speech
Cultivating an inner spiritual relationship with God requires that we become ever more refined in our awareness and in our speech. Typically, the way most people swear emphasizes a harsh attitude toward others and life in general. Often swearing is used to express anger and dislike. The neurosurgeons of today’s findings confirm what James wrote over two thousand years ago: if a man can control his tongue, he can control his own body!
To reinforce this truth, let’s consider one of the three graphic illustrations James gives concerning the tongue: “Likewise look at the ships, though they are great and are driven by rough winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the impulse of the helmsman determines.” (James 3:4-5)
In these verses, James draws a parallel between the rudder of a ship and your speech. Just as the rudder, which is “very small” in comparison to the large ship that weighs thousands of pounds, and controls the direction of the ship, and keeps it on course regardless of the fierce winds and pounding waves; your speech is also capable of directing the course of a person’s life. What does this mean to you as a believer?
Buddha touched on verbal abuse and harsh speech and advocating right speech by lecturing the steps of the Noble Eightfold Path which means to speak words that are blameless, and that are pleasant, easy on the ear, embracing the heart, pleasing and liked by everybody.
Let’s reexamine where we are and where we want to go for our culture and fellow man.
