Doylestown Township is currently transforming conventional stormwater basins into natural ecosystems. This process, known as naturalization, enhances habitat, improves water quality, and adds aesthetic value to our community.
Naturalization is part of the Township’s strategy to achieve the goals outlined in our Pollutant Reduction Plan (PRP). By reducing and controlling pollutants in stormwater, we can meet the requirements of the Municipal Storm Sewer System (MS4) program mandated by the state of Pennsylvania. This program requires municipalities to implement various initiatives aimed at minimizing pollutant discharge from stormwater systems and protecting water quality.
The Township has identified 26 basins owned and maintained by the Township as potential candidates for naturalization. We are evaluating these basins based on functionality, existing vegetation, and maintenance concerns to determine their suitability for the program.
Once the basins are selected, we will prepare inspection reports with recommendations for necessary changes. Basins included in the naturalization program will be monitored annually or as needed, allowing the Township to assess maintenance requirements and make modifications each year.
As of now, three basins have been successfully naturalized in 2021: the Ridings at Covered Bridge Basin on Ridings Lane, the Mystic View Lane Basin, and the Longwood Circle Basin.
If you have any questions regarding the naturalization of basins, please contact the Township at 215-348-9915.
