    SPOTLIGHT: Bucks County Dental Design

The problem of missing teeth has been a concern throughout history. Whether legend or fact, most of us have heard about George Washington’s wooden teeth! Modern dentistry offers three basic options to resolve a missing tooth or two. While implants (the first option) have become the newest approach to the missing tooth problem, a tried and true method, known as “crown and bridge” may be the right choice for many patients. This is the second option and is the focus of this article.

A third option, called a removable partial, often gives the patient another choice, albeit less comfortable and less aesthetically pleasing.

A bridge is a procedure where an empty space in the mouth is “bridged” between two natural teeth. The two natural teeth, the anchors, are attached to a “dummy” tooth, called a pontic. This pontic fills the space of the lost tooth or teeth.

The anchor teeth must be prepared in order to secure the bridge. A crown is cemented onto each of the anchor teeth and the pontic is securely and permanently attached to the two anchors. Not all teeth will qualify as anchor teeth. Each tooth must be free from caries and firmly planted in the jawbone. A tooth that has had dental work, provided it is not too extensive and is in good shape, can serve as an anchor.

A patient may choose a bridge for several reasons. Time is one factor. An implant and its restoration can take up to a year, while a bridge can be completed in a month. Also, the condition of the patient’s mouth factors into the decision. If the anchor teeth have some decay and require crowns anyway, the bridge becomes a logical option.

As always, your dentist is your “best friend” when it comes to dealing with missing teeth. He will guide you and help you make your best dental health decision. Don’t ignore your missing tooth–you want to happily and comfortably chew for the rest of your life!
