Winter riding
Biking in the fall and winter can be some of the most rewarding of the season. The air feels crisp & clean, the bike paths will be less crowded, and getting outside will go far in shaking off any seasonal blues.
Riding in colder weather means taking some precautions. Add a few items to your regular riding kit for the fall and winter including:
- Balaclava, ear band, neck gaiter, gloves, and warm socks: Any of these will protect you from the freezing wind.
- Eye protection: Sunglasses will keep the cold air from the sensitive skin around your eyes.
- Helmet: A helmet that can fit a hat or balaclava underneath will keep you comfortable.
- SPF – Even though the weather is chilly, the sun can still affect your skin. Protect it!
- Lights: In winter, daylight fades quickly; be visible.
- Fenders: Adding these to your bike will help prevent the rain or slush from soaking you.
- Battery cover: An insulated battery cover will help keep your battery happy as very cold temperatures will reduce battery range.
- Backup battery: Since very cold weather can reduce battery range, on longer trips, carrying an extra battery can save you from walking home.
- Clothing: Choose perspiration-wicking clothing to keep sweat away from your skin, and always opt for waterproof and wind proof gear.
Also remember to test using your bike’s controls wearing gloves and bulkier headgear. Can you still reach, operate, and see everything easily? You may have to adjust the position of some components on your bike such as the seat and possibly the brake levers. Take a couple of short shakedown rides in your winter riding gear to get the feel of how everything fits together.
