Afterschool programs often operate behind the scenes, providing essential support to families and children, yet they rarely receive the recognition they deserve. As the assistant supervisor at Neshaminy Kids Club, located in the Neshaminy School District’s elementary schools, I see firsthand the transformative impact our programs have on children’s lives.
Our six locations, including my home base at Tawanka Elementary, are more than just a place for kids to go after school—they are a second home. For over 15 years, Neshaminy Kids Club has been a cornerstone for families, offering not just care but enrichment, community, and life lessons.
My journey with Neshaminy Kids Club began as a student. My mom worked part time at the program, and I attended alongside her during my elementary years. It was here that I built lifelong friendships, learned practical skills like sewing and cooking, and, most importantly, developed social and problem-solving abilities.
As I grew older, I volunteered as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) during middle school and later returned as a dance and cheer instructor. Watching my mom, Miss Libby—beloved by all for her ability to connect with every child, no matter how challenging—taught me the value of making a difference in children’s lives.
Today, I strive to carry on that legacy. In an era where both parents often work, afterschool programs like ours are vital. We are not babysitters, as some might assume. We are educators, counselors, nurses, and mentors rolled into one. We provide a safe space where children can grow, learn, and thrive.
Our focus extends beyond academics. We teach kids how to cope with life’s challenges, how to be compassionate, and how to think of others. This ethos is reflected in our community initiatives. Over the years, we’ve hosted numerous events to teach children the value of giving back.
This past Halloween, our kids collected over 600 pieces of candy for Operation Gratitude, which we donated to a veterans’ home in Philadelphia. For the holidays, we organized a gift drive supporting Kisses for Kyle, Woods Services, and Anna’s Angels, with heartfelt cards and messages from the children accompanying the gifts.
At Tawanka, our kids run a weekly school store, raising funds for Anna’s Angels, which supports families battling childhood cancer. They send cards and video messages to cheer up children in need, and their enthusiasm for helping others is infectious.
Upcoming fundraisers include a winter clothing drive to collect warm coats and accessories for families in need.
Afterschool educators are the unsung heroes in many children’s lives. Without us, many kids would go home to an empty house. We provide a lifeline—a place where they feel safe, supported, and valued. It’s time we celebrate the essential role afterschool programs like Neshaminy Kids Club play in shaping our future generations.
