Spotlight: Langhorne Community Memorial Association

The historic house in the center of Langhorne: The Langhorne Community Memorial Association’s 1738 Richardson House

Have you attended a summer concert in Memorial Park in Langhorne? Attended Dickens Night there? The Richardson House has stood there in the center of Langhorne Borough at the intersection of Maple and Bellevue Avenues since 1738. Built by Joseph Richardson, the house served as his residence and general store. General Washington housed some of his troops there during the Revolutionary War. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Records show Benjamin Franklin and John Adams visited. The Marquis de LaFayette briefly stayed there.

In 1919 following the First World War, citizens from Langhorne, Langhorne Manor, South Langhorne (now Penndel), Hulmeville and Middletown Township formed the Langhorne Community Memorial Association and acquired the House as a memorial to all those from these municipalities who served during the war. Incorporated in 1921 the Memorial Association has owned and maintained the house since. A nine-member board of volunteers oversees the building and the grounds.

Today the Richardson House is the home of the Peace Center, the meeting place of the Four Lanes End Garden Club and is used by several community organizations including the Langhorne Council for the Arts. The Memorial Park is open to the public.

A 501 © (3) nonprofit, the Memorial Associations relies on rental income and donations to keep the building and park open to the public.  It receives no public funds. It also relies on volunteers to maintain the property.

To help maintain the Richardson House and property, please send donations to the Langhorne Community Memorial Association, 111 West Maple Avenue, Langhorne, PA 19047.
