Spotlight: Washington Crossing Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution

As an annual holiday tradition, the Washington Crossing Chapter DAR hosts a Wreaths Across America ceremony at the Revolutionary War soldier graves in Washington Crossing Historic Park.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. The Washington Crossing Chapter DAR promotes these missions with a variety of local activities.

The chapter sends care packages to U.S. troops, donates time and support to veterans in local nursing homes, supports local U.S. citizenship naturalization ceremonies, donates to Liberty USO, is registered as a Vietnam Commemorative Partner, and is proud to be a Wreaths Across America fundraiser supporting the Washington Crossing National Cemetery and the Washington Crossing Historic Park.

The chapter also sponsors the Pennsbury High School AFJROTC unit, offers the DAR Good Citizens scholarship contest to area high school seniors, holds an annual contest to recognize a local teacher of American History, and sponsors the Washington Crossing Society of the Children of the American Revolution and a local Junior American Citizens club.

Every year, the chapter is proud to host a Wreaths Across America ceremony to place wreaths on the Revolutionary War soldier graves in Washington Crossing Historic Park. We also place a patriotic holiday tree with ornaments, representing some aspect of American Revolutionary War history, in the lobby of the park visitors center.

Chapter meetings are held on Saturdays, September through May at the American Legion Post 440 in Newtown. Meeting programs offer historic, patriotic, and educational themes.

DAR welcomes any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a supporter of the American Revolution.

If you believe you have an ancestor who may have participated in a military, civil or patriotic capacity during Revolutionary times, the chapter has genealogy research specialists who will be happy to assist you in documenting your lineage.
