Is your marble countertop losing its shine?
Marble countertops commonly have a polished, glossy finish when newly installed. This feature is a natural property of the stone and can enhance the look of any area.
However, it is important to keep in mind that marble surfaces require proper maintenance. Marble is vulnerable to acidic and harsh substances.
When spills of these liquids dry on the surface, they produce a negative reaction known as etching. This causes dull spots that degrade the lustrous appeal of the stone.
These damages can only be removed with a special honing and polishing process. These processes require professional equipment and knowledge in marble restoration.
Caring for Your Marble Countertops
At Sir Grout, along with performing marble restoration services, we also instruct you on the proper care you should use to maintain your marble surfaces.
These helpful tips will help maintain your marble countertop:
- Keep the countertops as dry as possible. Do not leave spills lingering for long periods of time.
- Protect the countertop from hot pots, pans, and food dishes using trivets that allow airflow under the hot item. Excessive heat can cause thermal shock and may crack the stone. To prevent scratches, do not chop or slice anything directly on the countertop. Always use a cutting board.
Sealing Can Go a Long Way!
Have you had your countertops sealed recently? If not, now is the time! For optimal performance, we recommend that your stone countertops be sealed once every 1-2 years.
If you are unsure whether or not the time has come for your countertop to be resealed, pour a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads, it means your sealer is fine. If the liquid penetrates the surface, it is time to reseal the surface.
