Writing Workshop Series hosted by Friends of the Doylestown Library

Creative writers can hone their talents in a series of three writing workshops, each led by a professional writer/author, hosted free by the Friends of the Doylestown Library.

Adults, as well as pre-teen and teen writers, are invited to the workshops, each held on a Sunday at 2 pm in the Pearl Buck Room of the Doylestown Library, 150 S. Pine St. Participants are welcome to bring their own laptops or tablets, or pen and paper will be provided. Preregister for each workshop by emailing friendsofdoylestownlibrary@gmail.com.

October 6 – Just Write – Presented by LC Allingham, author and executive editor of Speculation Publications, this interactive workshop, focused on the writing process, will include a free-write session followed by a discussion on craft, with time left for revision. At the end of the session, Allingham will ask for feedback to help inform future workshops.

October 27 – Getting Ideas: Ideation/Character Work in Fiction – Leading the second workshop, Allingham will discuss ways to find story inspiration, whether it comes from current events, fairy tales, folklore adaptations, or common story tropes. Participants will have the opportunity to generate three to five story ideas, followed by a conversation about how to create well-rounded characters. Finally, there will be an opportunity to develop an individual character (either a new one or one from a current work-in-progress).

November 3 – Graphic: Another Way to Tell Your Story – Presented by Tim Smyth, teacher and author, this workshop will show how graphic novels are an effective approach to storytelling, and will provide techniques that can help each participant recreate a story from their own experience in graphic format. Attendees are encouraged to bring colored pencils.
