Oppositional First Grader Controlled by Neurofeedback

Donny, not his real name, a 1st grade student in Bensalem Schools, struggled in school with behavioral and academic issues. His mother expressed concern because he was impulsive, non-compliant and aggressive when angry. He could be explosive and resisted taking direction from adults. Other interventions have not been successful, and he appeared to be struggling academically and behaviorally. Parents questioned the benefits of medication and did not agree on discipline. His mother brought him to neurofeedback on recommendations from a friend who had success with the treatment.
On intake, mother reported that oppositional defiant behaviors were more of an issue than ADHD. Neurofeedback was started with a focus on both ODD and ADHD. Initially, Johnny was resistant to treatment, but rewards, which Donny enjoyed, were encouraged for compliant behaviors. Donny was referred for a psychoeducational evaluation at school because of extremely low academic scores in reading. At our request, mother had Donny’s visual processing evaluated, privately. The test was positive and vision therapy was begun in conjunction with neurofeedback.
Over time, Donny’s oppositional behaviors decreased. He received an IEP at school and was making progress with vision therapy. Academics were also improving and he began to enjoy success at school.
Multiple issues were addressed for Donny. These efforts began to show benefits over the school year as he became less irritable, more compliant at home and at school. He began to make academic progress in school for which he (and parents) were happy. He began to enjoy more pleasant and positive interactions both at home and at school.
Donny is now a much happier child. He can engage calmly and take redirection easily. His parents are very pleased with his progress and are hopeful for their child’s future.
