As the colder temperatures are upon us and the long winter ahead begins, there is nothing like sitting by a warm fire to keep you and your family cozy. Whether you have a wood burning or gas fireplace, be mindful of the following safety tips.
Before starting a fire, be sure that the flue is open to ensure smoke flows up the chimney. The flue should not be closed once all embers are done burning.
Remove ashes from previous fires to allow for greater air circulation and less smoke.
Use wood that is dry and well-aged. More smoke and soot buildup are created with green or wet wood.
Safety screens will prevent embers from escaping and items from accidentally slipping into the fire.
The area surrounding the fireplace should be cleared of any potentially flammable items that might catch fire or suffer damage by an ember or from high temperatures.
Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. The fire should be completely out before going to bed or leaving the house. Children should never be left alone in a room with a fire.
Install both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.
Keep a fire extinguisher on hand. Have your chimney inspected by a professional each year.
